Course Description: This course covers the requirements related to installation and obstruction rules for ESFR fire sprinklers per NFPA 13 ‘Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems’. The presenter will discuss the related design and layout implications as well as the “Obstructions and Early Suppression Fast Response Sprinklers” publication prepared by the NFPA Fire Protection Research Foundation. Participants will learn how these findings were considered by the technical committee for incorporation in the next edition of NFPA 13 (2022 edition) along with a comparison between the provisions of NFPA and the provisions of FM Data Sheet 2-0 regarding obstruction treatment for storage applications.

Learning Objectives:
•Explain the performance objectives of various obstruction rules related to ESFR sprinklers
•Apply the specific obstruction rules for ESFR sprinklers using both NFPA 13 and FM 2-0
•Learn the differences in obstruction requirements relative to discharge development and water reaching the hazard
•Understand appropriate judgement in the application of the required obstruction rules with the overruling objective being satisfactory performance of the sprinkler
•Recognize the use of testing to demonstrate impact of obstructions on fire control/suppression
