Course Description: This course highlights the most significant revisions to the 2022 edition of NFPA 13 ‘Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems’. The standard contains a philosophical change regarding the hydraulic design of sprinkler systems in favor of single point density design. Other changes reviewed include new requirements regarding the use of nitrogen in dry and preaction systems, the protection of occupied pods, revised rules for floor mounted obstructions, and freeze protection. In addition, ESFR obstruction rules have been revised to include the results of the completed Fire Protection Research Foundation project. The current status regarding the evaluation of water flow-tests is discussed along with the latest revisions to storage protection criteria.
Learning Objectives:
•Explain the process for revising NFPA standards
•Identify and locate the significant revisions found in the 2022 edition of the standard
•Explain the changes regarding single-point design criteria
•Locate and apply the revisions to obstruction rules for ESFR sprinklers
