Course Description

When installing a fire alarm system, commissioning is the verification and documentation process that confirms the system has been installed and functions in accordance with the design criteria. This course will discuss the purpose and benefits of system commissioning as well as the process for commissioning including testing initiating devices for alarm conditions, testing tamper switches and other warning devices for supervisory alerts, and verifying that notification devices functions in the event of an alarm. Documentation best practices will also be covered and how that information should be distributed to the stakeholders.

Jim Burian has more than 14 years of experience in fire protection engineering and is a Regional Practice Leader for Telgian Engineering & Consulting. He has been involved in various product safety and compliance projects seeking UL testing and approval as well as leading teams of sprinkler and alarm designers, engineers and code consultants providing fire protection services throughout the Mid-West.

Jim holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology, is the Chicago Chapter Chair of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SPFE), and an active member of AIA Chicago.
