Following a significant fire loss there is much to be learned about what occurred and how the loss may have been prevented. This webinar will focus on building and fire codes that exist today as a direct result of tragic fire loss. Several preventable disasters and the code changes they triggered will be covered such as the Great Chicago Fire, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, and The Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire. These major fires played a critical role in driving the development of modern-day fire codes and what is now the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. Understanding these events provides a clearer understanding and appreciation for current fire codes aiding in compliance, enforcement and risk management. Learning Objectives: • Learn about recurring failures we see in the building and fire codes • Describe historic fires leading to major changes to the fire codes • Understand the effect of large-scale fire fatalities on code enforcement • Gain a deeper understanding of the code development process Tom Parrish, SET, CFPS, PSP Tom Parrish has more than 30 years’ experience in fire protection and emergency response and is the retired Fire Marshal for Putnam Township Michigan as well as Vice President of Telgian. He serves on several NFPA technical committees including NFPA 72 Signaling Systems for the Protection of Life and Property and Emergency Communications Systems. He is a board member of AFAA and is a senior instructor for NFPA. His professional credentials include Level IV NICET Certified Fire Alarm Technician, Level III NICET Inspections and Testing, Certified Fire Protection Specialist and Master Electrician. He is board certified as a Physical Security Professional by ASIS and holds a bachelor’s in Industrial Technology from Kean University. This certificate will include the participants name, training subject, date, number of training hours completed and the Fire Smarts name, address and phone number. Certificates will comply with International Code Council (ICC) CEU requirements for ICC approved training courses. Fire Smarts is an approved training provider of the ICC.
